Fostering
Public Awareness
through Special Events
|
As
with all public institutions, the need in getting its message
out through the education of its visitors and through awareness
of its mission and role in society is of great importance. Over
the years, the Patton Museum volunteers have been actively involved
in planning, staging and participating in special events and
exhibitions at the museum or other locations on post or around
the country in and effort to fill that need.
Every
year, the museum holds its biggest living history demonstration
consisting of exhibits, demonstrations and recreated battles
from different time periods. For many years it took place on
the 4th of July, but since 2003 it has changed to Memorial Day
weekend in May.
Special monthly events are also held by the volunteers that
highlight some aspect of the soldier's life, either through
uniform, equipment, weapon or other exhibits. They also present
an exhibit of scale military models and figures created by members
and invited guest exhibitors.

The
volunteers have also participated in special ceremonies on post,
such as command change ceremonies or unit commemorations in
the
United States Army Armor Center Memorial Park. The volunteers
also participate in yearly parades or other events in communities
near Fort Knox.
In
2006, the Patton Museum had the distinct honor in hosting a
segment of Mail Call, a military history program aired on the
History Channel and hosted by retired Marine master sergeant
R. Lee Ermey. During the episode, the museum's collection and
volunteers were shown, as well as personal artifacts of General
Patton. Emery even had the pleasure of holding Patton's ivory-handled
Colt .45 pistol.
From
2002 through 2005, the volunteers traveled to Fort McPherson
and Fort Gillem in Atlanta, Georgia to participate in recognizing
the U.S. Army's birthday. There, along with Patton Museum vehicles,
they participated for spectators in ceremonies and mock battles
at both forts.
On
May 30-31, 2009, the Patton Museum celebrated its 60th anniversary.
That weekend was full of living history demonstrations, exhibits
and recreated battles using museum vehicles and reenactors.
