On February 27, Don Moriarty continued working on Cobra King with the
goal of uncovering past markings and serial numbers. Here Don has partially
uncovered a "3" under the present numbers.
|

After much chipping and sanding, Don uncovered a post-war serial number
that had been applied with a brush using stencils and the remanants of
another that was applied with a paint roller. This still is the incorrect
serial number for Cobra King which should end in a "4" instead
of a "1".

Here is a close-up of the brushed on serial number with the roller-applied
partially visible.

The most exciting
find, however, is the uncovering of the original Cobra King name on the
right side. Because only one side of Cobra King was photographed in Bastogne,
there was speculation if the other side was the same.

The Patton Museum staff has installed a new display on Cobra King in the
lobby of the museum.

Items found inside Cobra King are displayed along with their intact counterparts
as a comparison, such as hatch periscope, gasmask, entrenching tool and
ammunition.
